Top Tips for a Stress-Free MoveMay 31, 2022

Whether you’re moving across the country or across town, moving into a new home can be stressful—even if you’ve done it before. That’s why the Mungo Homes team put together a few of our top tips to make your moving experience as easy as possible. Hint: planning ahead will make a huge difference.
Pack smarter, not harder
Getting everything you own into boxes and transporting them to a new house can take a real toll. There’s a few things you can do to make the packing process simpler and thus, your move.
First, your family needs to take inventory of everything in your home and create three separate categories: keep, donate, and trash. Still hanging onto an old blender after getting a replacement? Pulling clothes that haven’t been worn in years out of closets? Take gently used items to a local donation center and trash what you can—all to help lighten the load of your move.
Once you’ve figured out what needs to be moved, make sure your moving boxes are labeled correctly. This makes everything easier on both movers and on yourself. All of your kitchen, bathroom, living room and bedroom boxes will make their way to the correct place right away. You can take it one step further with extra details, like “Kitchen - Pantry” and “Kitchen - Upper Cabinets” if you really want to plan ahead.
Our last packing tip is to ensure each family member packs a moving day bag. Set aside a few sets of clothes, bathroom towels, toiletries, device chargers and medications you use on a daily basis. Digging through boxes to find your toothbrush is not an ideal way to end a long day of moving.
Consider utilities and services
Once you know your move-in date, set up the utilities you’ll need to use the first day in your new home. Start with electricity, gas, sewer and water before moving on to the internet, trash, home security and any other utilities you’ll need. After you’ve alerted the utility companies of your new moving date, make sure you remember to cancel or pause everything at your current house or apartment so you don’t end up paying extra after move-out.
Once utilities are handled, you’ll also want to submit a change of address to the post office and other delivery services to let them know where to forward your mail.
Cancel memberships and establish new habits
If you’re moving to a completely different area, this is the perfect time to cancel any gym memberships or get a refill on prescriptions that might be running low—giving you plenty of time to get settled into your new home. Prior to moving, take your new neighborhood into consideration and create a list of places you’ll need to establish a habit with: gyms, pharmacies, grocery stores, dry cleaners, public pools, etc. It’ll be much easier for your family to adjust to a new home once they’re introduced to the great new things near the neighborhood.
Enjoy your new home
